T-Lock shingles have been discontinued since 2005
Although T-lock shingles were widely used in Wyoming, today most insurance companies are willing to replace them even if one or more shingles have had wind or hail damage because they have been discontinued since about 2005. T-lock shingles become thinner and less effective over time. They have a tendency to buckle and create air pockets preventing them from laying flat on the decking which make them prone to hail strikes and wind damage. This design flaw has prompted manufacturers to discontinue and phase them out over time. Preventing any contractor to make proper repairs.
However, there are still hundreds - maybe even thousands - of homes in Wyoming with T-Lock shingles and many of them, even though they are almost 15 years old, are still holding up just fine! We've even seen some T-Lock roofs that are as old as 20 years and they still look great.
So if you your concerned about your T-Lock shingles, it would benefit you to get a 2nd opinion from a trust-worthy roofing contractor before you call in a claim. On the other hand... if you're trying to sell or buy a home that has T-Lock shingles, that could be a challenge for you. If an inspection is required during the sale process, if damage to your T-lock shingles occurred more than 12 months prior to the inspection, in the majority of cases the Buyer (or their Lender) will require that the roof be replaced prior to closing or they may require a discount in the purchase price to cover the T-lock roof replacement. In addition, it is extremely difficult to get new insurance on a house that has T-lock shingles and hard to keep insured, as many insurance companies are requiring homeowner’s to get these roofs replaced.
